Frequently heard statements

OK, so this isn't strictly a traditional FAQ, but these are the kinds of things that come up again and again.

Which just illustrates just how common these issues are.

There's nowhere to fit a utility room/downstairs loo in this house

Without wanting to sound like a pantomime... Oh Yes There Is!

There are so many under utilised spaced in houses that, with some rejigging and imagination, you can always find space for that extra 'room'

This house is great, but the layout is just off... I can't work it out

It's really normal to want to change your house in some way but be wary, or even afraid, of comitting to expensive builders or architects. Save a lot of time and money by working out some options before you brief anyone. Get to know what you need and want first. It will probably give you the confidence to just book in the project and get on with it

We need to move our kids' rooms around now they are older

Most families go through this at some stage. You want everyone to have enough space while also making sure of things like privacy changes as the kids grow up. There are many different solutions to this problem, and with a bit of ingenuity it's usually fixable without having to move house

I love the location & layout of this flat, but it's never felt like mine

Renting in this country is really hard. In Europe renters get so much more freedom to decorate and even develop the houses they live in. But we don't have that yet so we need to be creative with the landlord's wishes in mind. It's important to make the effort as your home really should feel personal

I've lived here for years and this hallway/room has never been tidy

Storage is an issue in this situation, yes, but it's as much about use of space. How and where you put storage is as important as the storage itself. What is being stored and where it is has to be factored in to the bigger picture of how the whole room is used

#5

This is going to be expensive...

No, it's really not. If you adopt the habit of prioritising the use existing items, and getting free stuff and materials, it doesn't have to cost a thing. Of course you might need to buy something - like wood for a storage area - but there are ways around big spending. And all of this is most certainly not about HAVING MORE, it's about it GETTING IT RIGHT
